La Santa Market ... shopping by moonlight ...

There's something about open-air shopping in the moonlight on a balmy summer night that really appeals. And when the venue is as pretty as the Santa Market in Santa Cristina d'Aro you'd be crazy not to trot along and try it out. It's being held at the riding stables just outside the village, and they've got a great line-up of music and gastronomy to tempt all the senses after a hard day on the beach.

We pottered along the other night with some good friends who ride at the stables.

After the terror attack in Barcelona there's been an increased police presence all over the Costa Brava, but people are still going out, enjoying the cool of the evening and defying the terrorists by embracing life.

People here like to pasear, to go for a walk, meet and greet their friends and share the evening meal al fresco beneath the stars. And it would take more than a few crazy terrorists to throw them off their stride.

Admittedly, here in Santa Cristina at the Santa Market, it's a pedestrian-only area with the exception of the Moritz Seat car, and they've taken the precaution of hiding its keys ...

It's such a dinky little car. Mr B has (not so very) fond memories of travelling from Barcelona in a car just like this one with his parents and siblings to visit his grandparents in Alicante in the South of Spain. It was a journey of many hours along hot, dusty roads with no air-conditioning; mum and dad sat up front, and all four siblings sat in a warring line on the back seat. It must have been cosy.

We chose some food, bought some of those wonderful Moritz beers,  found a table and settled down for a chat. It felt so relaxed, with a little samba music floating on the breeze as everyone laughed and joked and enjoyed the moment. Did you know that Moritz beer is the only beer in the world with labelling exclusively in the Catalan language? No? Me neither. I've just foraged that fact from the back of a bottle 😜.

Anyway here's to the spirit of Catalonia, to living in the moment and to not giving in to terrorism,
