First proper make of 2018

Well to be fair I did most of the work on it over the Christmas holidays. I wanted something that I could work on whilst watching the usual marathon of festive television. It had to be a pattern that didn't require too much stitch counting or demand a huge amount of attention. What I was after was something dead easy that I could do after a few glasses of wine with half my brain following a box set.

And this is what I came up with:

Ta-dah!

It's a free pattern from Ravelry, which you can find here: Age of Brass and Steam Kerchief

As originally designed it was knit in double knitting. I wanted to road-test the Cochineal that I'd dyed before Christmas so I modified the pattern and knit it on 2.5 mm needles with my Cochineal 4 ply, and just kept going until I got something that I thought would work as a triangular scarf.

I've got a lovely set of Addi circulars with a 120 cm span and fixed lace points. I have a tendency to move stitches along my needles by resting my left point against the side of my right index finger, and pushing the stitches up to the business end. And every time I tackle lace points this habit soon results in finger mutilation. As a result I wear a protective plaster to cushion the impact point where I know I'll make contact. It's a bit awkward at first, but soon you master the art of throwing the wool a little wider and, before you know it, you're motoring through pain-free rows.

I used 5 x 20g skeins of my own 4ply, which knit up to produce a triangle that measures 137 cm across its long top edge, and falls to a depth of 37 cm. If you've an enthusiastic sock knitter this would be a great pattern for using up all those bits of left-over 4 ply.

All the best for now,

Bonny x

  1. That is so lovely, and you're very talented. I cannot seem to master knitting at all. I have crocheted forever, but love the look of knitting. This turned out great.

  2. Oh, Bonny, this is such a beautiful colour. I do like patterns that don’t require too much attention and allow for watching television. Marie x
