It's becoming a bit of a habit: first carrots, now cherries! I'm (health) food obsessed at the moment. With cold, grey weather outside it's a relief to have something colourful to play with inside.
As with the carrots I'm using our own label Costa Brava Organic Cotton in 4 ply. My colour-ways are Pillarbox (red) for the cherries, and Green Bean for the stems.
If you'd like to get started on a fruit bowl of your own, just carry on for the pattern.
Cherry
Using red 4 ply cotton and 2.5 mm needles (UK size 12), cast on 8 stitches.
Row 1: knit into the front and back of every stitch. You will finish the row with 16 stitches.
Rows 2 to 10: work in stocking stitch i.e. knit all right side rows and purl all wrong side rows.
Row 11: Knit 2 together all across the row. You will finish the row with 8 stitches.
Cut the yarn leaving a nice long tail for sewing up. Thread the yarn through a tapestry needle, and draw it through all the stitches on the needle, pulling them tight to secure the end of the cherry. Continue to sew up the side of the cherry, stuffing it with a little toy stuffing as you go, and then sew across the top. Fasten off.
Cherry Stem
Using double pointed needles and green 4 ply cotton cast on 3 stitches and work a 3 stitch i-cord to a length of 5 cm/ 2" - or however long you'd like your stem to be. Cast off, darn in the loose ends and sew the stem to the bottom of the cherry.
You can make another and attach the two stems at the bottom, or keep them separate - as you wish.
